Can you tell how sheepishly excited I am to be in the presence of Henry Rollins? I was about to bust. There are no words to express my adoration for this man and his work.

What I took from the show (in a nut shell): free pizza for all, listen to the Ramones, world peace via world travel, and going to a Black Flag gig CAN put your eye out.

Caroline Marchildon @ 40 Watt Club

What do you do at your internship?
I assist Velena Vego with the booking at the 40 Watt as well as the Buckhead Theatre because she manages both. I also help with a lot of social media and day-to-day things like ticket orders, merch orders, putting up posters - things like that.

How has the 40 Watt catered to your interests in the music business industry?
I’ve always been in love with the 40 Watt, so it’s really exciting to actually intern there. It’s super hands on. I’m doing a little bit of everything and I get to experience a lot of different things. I get to see the whole process of putting a show together, and it’s pretty awesome.

What has been your favorite moment while interning at the 40 Watt?
I think my favorite moment was probably the Low Anthem show. I worked really hard with WUOG, the campus radio station, to promote the show as well as with Velena and all of the other interns. There was a really solid turn-out, and the crowd was just incredible. Low Anthem also did a cover of a Leonard Cohen song on his birthday. That was just a culmination of things that made for a great night.

Have you been able to transfer your knowledge learned in your MBUS classes over to your internship?
Yeah, I have. I’ve worked on a lot of spreadsheets and MBUS has helped me focus on what’s important in those spreadsheets. It’s nice as an intern to actually understand what they’re talking about instead of just filling out data.

Do you feel like you are developing skills at the 40 Watt that will help you in the future?
Definitely. Booking’s a really hard thing to try to get into, but I think that no matter what angle I take with the music business, to see all sides of it—the live side as well as the PR side—is a helpful experience. The more contact with people in the business, the better. Velena’s been in the business for so long. She’s fantastic at what she does, so just being around her is incredible.

Would you recommend an internship at the 40 Watt?
Absolutely. The 40 Watt is legendary. It’s a staple of Athens, but it’s always changing. It’s great.

Any advice for incoming students in the MBUS program?
Get involved as much as possible but be consistent with what you’re doing. You don’t want to do so many things that you’re super spread out and not dedicated. There’s no shame in only being in a couple of clubs. I’m only involved with one group though the University (WUOG), but I’m there ALL the time. I think it’s worth it because you build relationships and you build a sense of yourself.
